Christmas Fun At Sennen Cove
December is a great month to visit Sennen Cove. There are places to visit and people to see. Head for the local Christmas markets and fayres and meet some local artisans, craftsmen and women. It's a perfect opportunity to get some last-minute Christmas gifts.
The markets have other interesting events and stalls with Guise dancers, 'obby 'osses, local choirs and some cosy, welcoming pubs. How about a glass or two of mulled wine? Maybe even pick up a Cornish bush.
Cornish Bush
This is the Cornish interpretation of a Christmas wreath. The wreaths date back to pagan times, where they represented new life. You would find them hung indoors from the 20th of December. On this date, they would light a candle and dance to celebrate the God of Light.
The wreaths are similar to the classic Christmas wreath in that you weave holly, ivy and mistletoe around a branch of willow, known as a withy. Then, you would decorate it with apples. While visiting, look at the local notices, and you might find a class to learn how to make the Cornish Bush yourself.
In December, you'll find one happening at the Lands End Pub. Learn how to make a Cornish Bush and enjoy a gin and rum tasting, warming and loads of fun for all ages. You can also get involved in a Mummer's Play or listen to the haunting tales sung in the emotive sea shanties in several Cornish pubs.
Wet Water Swimming: Are You Up For It?
Christmas and Boxing Day, going for a dip in cold British waters occurs all over the UK, and Cornwall is no exception. You won't have to go far. It is just a 2-minute walk from your Vallendreath cottage. Once on Whitesands Bay, you can join locals and visitors alike in either swimming—without a wet suit—or supporting the brave souls who do! Wearing fancy dress is optional, but there will be quite a collection of get-ups. Then, head back to your warm cottage for a warm drink.
PKPorthcurno - An Intriguing Place To Visit
A 15-minute drive across the other coast brings you to this interesting, interactive PK Prothcurno museum focused on communication. From 150 years ago, when cables first landed in the UK at Porthcurno, to today's global communication, the museum offers some fascinating insights into how we arrived at our digital world.
